Glen Affric is widely regarded as one of Scotland’s most breathtaking autumn locations - a rich tapestry of ancient Caledonian pines, birches, oaks, and shimmering lochs, all set against a dramatic Highland backdrop. In mid October, the glen transforms into a world of intense colour: golds, russets, and deep greens weave together beneath soft, atmospheric light, while early-morning mist often lingers in the glens, creating endlessly photogenic conditions. This workshop is designed to take full advantage of this location at its most magical time of year.

Over 3½ days, we will explore Glen Affric and its neighbouring glens - Glen Cannich and Glen Strathfarrar - each offering unique photographic opportunities. From sweeping vistas to secluded forest corners filled with texture, pattern, and mood, every session will be planned to maximise the quality of light and seasonal colour. With tuition throughout, you will learn how to craft strong woodland compositions, work confidently with complex scenes, and harness the atmosphere that defines Scotland in autumn.

Whether photographing vast landscapes - or honing in on fine details such as moss, lichens, fungi or reflective loch surfaces - the aim is to help you develop a more refined eye and a stronger creative voice. We will discuss creative in-camera techniques such as ICM (Intentional Camera Motion) and multiple exposure photography. Guidance will be tailored to individual ability and interests - perfect for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of light, exposure, and visual storytelling in woodland environments.

By the end of the workshop, you will come away with a collection of woodland images that capture the true spirit of Glen Affric in autumn: dramatic, peaceful, colourful, and full of character. More importantly, you will leave with new skills, fresh inspiration, and a renewed confidence in approaching one of landscape photography’s most rewarding yet challenging subjects — autumn woodland.

During the workshop, we will be staying at The Priory Hotel, a three-star Visit Scotland rated hotel located in the picturesque village of Beauly in the Scottish Highlands. The hotel is a short, 12-mile drive from Inverness and just off the breathtaking North Coast 500 driving route. This traditional Scottish hotel is known for its warm Highland hospitality, friendly service and local cuisine. Dinner (Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday) and breakfast and packed lunch (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday) are included in the cost of the workshop. The social element of our workshops is important to us and the hotel's whisky bar is a great place to relax at the end of the day.

With a group size of just 8 people, but 2 tutors, you are assured of plenty of attention and bespoke learning and feedback while in the field. For comfort and convenience, transport is via car sharing. We hope you can join us...
