Home to crashing Atlantic waves, a large golden sandy beach, dramatic rocky ledges, beautiful geology, and intriguing costal detail, Trebarwith Strand in North Cornwall is the perfect place to learn how to create your very own hard cover, leporello style, photo book.

This is D2Ds very first dedicated book-making workshop. With expert guidance from Clea and Adrian Beasley, the aim of the Capture to Book concept is to teach all the steps necessary to make a handmade photobook, illustrated with your very own images. Our intention is that you will leave us feeling confident and enthused to continue your book-making journey independently. Quite simply, making something tactile and unique from your own images is a hugely rewarding experience. Photographs become so much more impactful and meaningful once they are printed! During this creative workshop you will learn how to capture, select, sequence, and edit a collection of images, followed by step-by-step instruction on how to make a book. This workshop will guide and support you to create a beautiful handmade book featuring your chosen images or theme.

We will meet mid-morning on day one, have a cuppa, and discuss the agenda, the concept and aim of the workshop, including identifying a suitable theme for your book, and photographing with a theme in mind. In the afternoon, and also on the morning of the second day, we will immerse ourselves in photographing a single location, revisiting at different tides and times of day, so that you can choose different elements to photograph that attract or intrigue you. Focusing on just one location will allow you to develop an intimate understanding and capture unique images - both wider views, and intimate shots of texture and coastal detail. We feel Trebarwith Strand is a perfect location for such attention. At low tide, a large sandy bay and wonderful geology is revealed - and at high tide waves rush over the Strand and rocky ledges. We will encourage you to wander and explore independently, and discover your own, unique series of images that will work collectively in your photo book. After lunch on the second day, our focus will switch from picture-taking to the process of picture selection, sequencing, editing your chosen files ready for print, and layouts using Affinity and/or Lightroom templates. Finally, under Clea and Adrian's expert guidance, we will discuss page layout. There will be an opportunity to add small amounts of text to your pages if you wish. Day three is dedicated to book-making. Clea will introduce you to the process, tools, and materials to construct a hard cover leporello style book with 12 printable pages and a cover title insert. We will take coffee breaks throughout the day and stop for lunch. We anticipate finishing by 5pm. After the workshop, Clea will also provide you with a comprehensive set of instructions, including links to tools, materials and suppliers.

The Port William, nestled on the side of a steep valley and overlooking Trebarwith beach, is the perfect base for this one-location style workshop. The pub offers 4-star accomodation, with all rooms finished to a high standard and providing breathtaking sea views. The Port William is renowned for excellent pub food and a comfortable welcoming bar, with its cosy log fires and conservatory style dining area. A hearty Cornish breakfast is included on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, together with two course dinner on Monday and Tuesday evening.

For this workshop, we are limiting the group size to just seven participants to ensure a large amount of individual, bespoke tuition is guaranteed while on location. Local professional photographer, Ross Hoddinott, will be joining Clea and Adrian throughout the workshop to provide photography tuition, location guidance, and assistance. This promises to be a truly unique, exciting, creative, and rewarding workshop. We hope you can join us...

What to bring:

The Cornish weather can be unpredictable so we strongly recommend that you bring along a collection of around 50 existing images (covering one or two themes) that could be used for the select/edit/print element of the workshop if the weather misbehaves on the first and second days. You will need a maximum of 12 images for the book. No previous experience is needed, especially for the editing, printing and book making elements. Training and tools will be provided throughout the workshop. However, you will need to bring a computer for the editing and selection session. If you do not have a suitable computer, we may be able to loan one but please check with us before booking. Editing could also be done on an iPad or iPhone if necessary.
