Mystical Wiltshire - Mono & Infrared Special

Late spring can be a difficult time of year for landscape photographers: not only are the days long and sunrise unsociably early, but the sun rises quickly, so for much of the day, the light can be harsh and unflattering. However, with the right approach and the right locations, this time of year can be highly productive for landscape photography. Outside of the golden hours, one approach is to think black and white - especially infrared - and when it comes to locations, few areas of the UK are as suited to dramatic mono images as Wiltshire.
Wiltshire is home to some of the world’s most important prehistoric sites, whose haunting atmosphere is enhanced when carefully captured on infrared and converted to black and white. As well as some of the better known locations such as Avebury, we will also guide you around some of the county’s hidden gems, including magnificent hill forts and tracts of ancient woodland.
The first two days of the workshop will be spent on location under the guidance of expert tutors Jeremy Walker and Mark Bauer. Don’t be detered if you don’t already own an infrared-converted camera as there will be a number of infrared filters available for you to use and experiment with, as well as one or two converted Nikon and Canon cameras. Prior to the workshop, we will also give you advice on lens choice, as some lenses can suffer from ‘hotspots’ when shooting in the infrared spectrum. If monochrome or infrared are not your thing, still feel free to join us to shoot some of these wonderful locations - we’re not going to stop anyone shooting colour, and if we are lucky enough to get a spectacular sunrise or sunset, we will be encouraging you to shoot in colour as you might normally.
Of course, with monochrome photography (and infrared in particular) capturing the image is only the beginning - post-production is an essential step in the process. Therefore, day three is dedicated purely to processing and printing. Adobe certified expert Adrian Beasley will be joining us to show you how to get the most out of your files and produce stunning prints of your work. Adrian will bring with him a 50inch TV, printers, specialisat photo papers and, as well as benefiting from Adrian's in-depth knowledge of Lightroom and Photoshop, you will also take home a Lightroom workbook and three A3-sized prints of your freshly captured mono images.
For this workshop, we are based at the Alexandra House Hotel, with its excellent conference and meeting facilities, perfect for our classroom sessions. Located just outside Swindon, it not only provides easy access to our main locations, but is also contemporary and comfortable, with a restaurant offering local and seasonal dishes.
This workshop proved extremely popular when we ran it for the first time in 2021 and we hope you can join us next year….
