Purbeck in Dorset is one of the most popular places in the UK for landscape photography, and long exposure photography in particular. The start of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, it is home to some superb locations for capturing long exposures and for indulging in minimalist compositions, including the dramatic, rocky ledges at Kimmeridge Bay, and the iconic old pier at Swanage.
We will meet in Swanage early in the day. There are a number of fantastic viewpoints just a stone’s throw from the car park: Swanage Pier and Old Pier, the Old Stone Quay, the Banjo Jetty and the main beach, with its series of weathered wooden groynes. All of these make ideal subjects for long exposure studies.
Later in the day, we will make the short journey to Kimmeridge Bay (parking charges apply), where we will shoot the waves washing over the rocky ledges, with the atmospheric folly of Clavell’s Tower perched on the cliffs above the bay making a natural focal point in the background. We will then make the short journey to our sunset location, the iconic Durdle Door.
Don’t worry if you don’t presently have any filters, as we have LEE Filter systems and filters for participants to use, including a number of Big Stoppers, Little Stoppers and Super Stoppers, as well as sets of graduated neutral density filters. This is the perfect opportunity to develop your long exposure skills, or try the techniques for the first time. Mark and Ross are both LEE Filters Masters and will be able to help you with all aspects of filtration and long exposure photography.
The group size is limited to just 8 participants and there is plenty of room to to spread out at all the viewpoints. Having two tutors means that you will be guaranteed a a high level of individual attention. As it is a one-day event, we will spend as much time in the field as possiblle - locations are all just a few miles apart and so we there will not be any need for car sharing. We'll have time for a short stop in a local café but it's a long day, so please bring plenty of snacks and drinks with you. We'll aim to make the most of the available light and ensure that you benefit from a full day's photography and tuition.
As we will not start the day with a classroom briefing, we will instead send a comprehensive set of briefing notes for you to study before the workshop. On the workshop itself, you can put what you've studied into practice under the guidance of your tutors.
Mark and Ross both have an intimate knowledge of this area, so as well as receiving expert tuition from your two tutors, you can be sure that you will be in the right locations at the best time of day to make the most of them. We hope you can join us…
